Why public holiday dates change every year
Fixed dates, Easter-based dates and legal substitute days behave differently across years.
Why does a holiday sometimes move while another keeps its date? The answer depends on the rule defining it. Recheck both the year and the country before copying dates into a plan.
Fixed date, different weekday
Poland's Christmas Eve is always 24 December under the public holidays law. Its weekday changes as the year changes; it falls on Friday in 2027. A new weekday is not a new holiday date.
Dates linked to Easter
Good Friday and Easter Monday in Czechia are listed without fixed calendar dates in the holiday law. Calculating Western Easter gives Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March in 2027. Poland's Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Pentecost Sunday and Corpus Christi are likewise movable. Copying their 2026 dates into 2027 would be wrong.
Substitute days need their own rule
A weekend holiday does not create the same replacement everywhere. The UK government list explicitly makes 27 December 2027 a Christmas substitute bank holiday in England and Wales. Poland instead adjusts working time for a Saturday holiday under its employment rules; the employer determines the particular day off, so there is no one nationwide date to insert. Check the country, year and regional scope before exporting an ICS file.
