History
Prešeren Day is celebrated in Slovenia on February 8th in honor of the national poet Franc Prešeren, who died on this day in 1849. His work was of great importance to the development of the Slovenian language and culture, and the national anthem is derived from his poem "Zdravljica." Since 1945, this day has been an official celebration of national culture.
Traditions
For a long time, before Prešeren Day became an official national holiday, the poet's memory was honored primarily locally and within literary and patriotic circles. Poetry evenings, cultural gatherings, and academies were organized in his honor, especially in the second half of the 19th century. Only later did the celebrations take on a nationwide character and evolve into a cultural celebration for all of Slovenia.
Contemporary Celebrations
Today, Prešeren Day is celebrated as the most important cultural holiday in Slovenia. Numerous concerts, exhibitions, theater performances, and literary events are organized, and admission to museums and galleries is often free on this day. The highlight of the celebrations is the presentation of the Prešeren Award, the country's highest cultural honor.
