History

The holiday was introduced in Ukraine as a replacement for the Soviet-era Defender of the Fatherland Day, reflecting the country’s own state traditions and post-independence identity. It was originally marked on 14 October and later moved to 1 October.

The holiday’s current date, 1 October, is shared with the Ukrainian Orthodox feast of the Protection of the Mother of God in the revised calendar used by many Ukrainian Christians. The change to an October observance also separated the state holiday from the old February date associated with the Soviet Defender of the Fatherland Day.
