Holiday guide
What does ‘in lieu’ mean on a holiday calendar?
See why a substitute day can appear next to the original celebration and which date may be the actual day off.
When a fixed-date holiday falls on a weekend, some legal systems provide another day off. Calendars often describe that replacement as an in-lieu or substitute day.
The observance and the day off
The traditional date does not change, but the non-working day may move to Monday or another date chosen by law. Both entries can therefore be useful and are not necessarily duplicates.
Rules differ by country
Substitution may be automatic, limited to particular weekdays, or unavailable. Check the local rule before making work or travel arrangements.
