How to plan a trip around public holidays

Use holiday calendars to anticipate closures, busy travel dates and memorable local celebrations.

Public holidays can transform a trip. They can bring festivals and special events, but also closed museums, reduced public transport and higher accommodation prices.

Check national and regional coverage

A holiday may apply nationwide, in one state or canton, or only in a particular city. Review the destination itself rather than relying only on the country name.

Look at adjacent days

When a holiday falls near a weekend, many people take an extra day off. Roads, airports and trains can become busy before the official date.

Keep a copy of the dates

Download the ICS calendar for your destination and add it to your preferred calendar app. Recheck important opening hours directly with the venue before travelling.
